Liliana was conceived during a lunar eclipse on the winter solstice of 2010. As I gazed upon the moon, I watched as the last sliver of white light disappeared from its face. At that moment, in my minds eye, I saw the face of a woman; Liliana. She showed me a vision of a living breathing piece of art. It was astounding, a multigenerational organic composition composed entirely of colored disks in the shape of the Flower of Life.
The idea is that the Flower of Life would be colored in to create Liliana Tiles. Initially, there would be only one tile, and all proceeding tiles would be children and grandchildren of that tile. It would create a sort of ontological tree structure where every single tile could be traced back to the original "seed".
You could then create an animation which would flow through the system from the root to any given grandchild. I envisioned creating a sort of website where these tiles could be created and distributed. Any given tile could be commented on, or given a thumbs up or thumbs down. Copious amounts of metadata would also be collected for every single tile.
Users would be able to create their own sequences of Liliana tiles, and tiles and sequences would be able to be browsed by any number of different search parameters. The vision was beautiful, and epic, but myself being a lone programmer with little experience, it never saw the light of day.
If your dream is too epic, you will probably fail. But that shouldn't stop you from giving it your most heartfelt attempt in an effort to imitate that initial vision. This website is my attempt. As I had to teach myself the technologies as I went, it took an absurd amount of time and effort, but I'm at least appeased for now. The most integral part of the whole vision was actually creating the Liliana tiles, and you can do that with what I've created, so in that regard, I succeeded. If I ever find myself as a programming guru with thousands of hours to waste, I may attempt the real thing. Until then, this will have to do.
I hope you find creating Liliana tiles as rewarding as I do. The entire coloring process can be used as a sort of meditation, and each tile becomes representative of that moment in time when it was created, a moment which will never happen again, but through the tile can be remembered forever...
